The Winter Quarters Temple is next to the cemetery where many pioneers where buried.
There is a statue in the cemetery remembering the sacrifices of the pioneers.
The visitor center is right across the street from the cemetary.
The grass grows tall out on the prairie.
Independence Rock was an important landmark for pioneers going west. It was the half-way point for travelers going to Oregon.
It was fun climbing the Independence rock.
The view is great at the top of the mountain.
Devil's Gate is also an important part of Mormon history and handcart pioneers.
Devil's gate is very close to Martin's Cove visitor center.
The church has really improved upon the facilities at Martin's Cove visitor's center.
Fort Seminoe was here during the handcart days but provided no aid for the Martin handcart company
They have established three new statues as a memorial to the young men rescuers which helped the martin company across the Sweetwater River and into what is now called Martin's Cove.ha
The cove is actually a horse-shaped geological feature with a large mound in the center next to the mountain
These are the ruts or path used by the Mormon pioneers
While we were at the visitor's center, there were four groups of handcart "trekkers". The guide reported that there are over 22,000 youth scheduled to participate in a trek at Martin's Cove this summer.
Split Rock was another geological feature that the pioneers used to keep them on the trail
There is a new visitor center which will be dedicated in August at what is called the Sixth Crossing of the Sweetwater River. This is were the Willie Handcart were rescued and is about 50 miles farther west than the Martin Handcart company was stranded at Martin's Cove.
Rock Creek Hollow is where the actual wagons of food met the starving Willie handcart company. It is referred to as the second rescue. The First rescue of the Willie Handcart company was tat the 6th Crossing by the Express Riders of the rescue Party and Rock Creek was where they met the wagons of food and extra clothing.
These pioneers died even after being rescued due to poor health due to prolonged exposure to extreme living conditions.
President Hinckley dedicated "The Second Rescue" monument at Rock Creek Hollow.
There are many old deserted buildings in the area from the gold rush days which have been continued to be worked even into the present day.
The Mormon Trail and the Oregon Trail split from each other just south of South Pass.
